From hills, ghats and beaches to lakes, Maharashtra is a cornucopia of nature's bounty
The Gateway of India. Home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Financial capital of the country. One of the most industrialised states. You can refer to Maharashtra by all these names, but what gives the place its identity is its diverse geography.
From hills to ghats and beaches to lakes, Maharashtra has it all. As commercial as the state gets, why explore only the places that pop-up on our Instagram feed. It’s time to move over Alibaug, Goa, Mumbai, Ajanta & Ellora and Elephanta Caves. Let’s explore the real Maharashtra. Here are my recommendations:

Guhagar beach is of the longest beaches in the Konkan region that boasts of its clean and vast stretch of white sand. An hour away from Chiplun and located in Ratnagiri district, Guhagar beach is a picnic spot visited by those who prefer peaceful beaches where they can quietly sit down and relax.

Lonar Crater, Aurangabad

One of the unique places to visit in India, Lonar Crater is a distinct blue lagoon that was created due to meteorite impact. Also known as the Lonar lake, it is a rare water body not only in India but in the world as it displays saline as well as alkaline properties.
This hyper velocity impact crater is located in Buldhana district near Aurangabad and has always remained a centre of attraction for scientists and travellers alike.
Best Time to Visit: November to January
Reverse Waterfall, Naneghat

Strange but real, there is a reverse waterfall in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra just about three hours from Mumbai. This unique waterfall in Naneghat is where the water is blown upward due to strong wind giving a perception of an upward flowing waterfall.
It is a unique sight of this cryptic mountain where this strange phenomenon happens and that is why this spot has made it to the list of unique places in India where travellers can witness waterfall flowing in the reverse direction.

Shani Shingnapur, Maharashtra
Can you imagine a place where houses and shops have no doors? If not then you got to visit Shani Shingnapur. This village in Maharashtra is popular for an undying faith in Lord Shani who is believed to be the guardian of the village for 300 years.

According to legends, a heavy black boulder was found washed up on the shores of Pantanal river after a massive flood. The villagers were curious and began to investigate the huge slab by poking a stick. Suddenly they noticed blood oozing out of it which made them believe that it is no ordinary rock. That night, Lord Shani appeared in the dream of the village head and ordered him to place this rock in the open air, right in the heart of the village. He ensured that he will protect the village and ensure complete safety.
Since then the tradition of having no locks is prevalent here and many people visit here to witness this unique feature.
