Matunga: A Delectable Slice of South India

There’s nothing a steaming plate of Idli-vada can’t solve.

If you’re a South Indian living away from home, then you know how comforting a plate of steaming Idlis and piping hot Sambar can be. Moving to Mumbai from Hyderabad 10 months ago felt like a dream but only till I started missing the flavours from the City of Nizams. And so, started the quest for good South Indian cuisine.

My picks have to be Hotel Ramashray, Café Madras and Café Mysore in Matunga.

Hotel Ramashray

As they say, there’s nothing a plateful of Idli-Vada can’t solve. And, Ramashray is proving this statement right each day by serving a mouth-watering spread, starting right from famous South Indian breakfasts such as Idli, Vada, Upma, Poori-Kurma and Dosas to Pineapple Sheera, Pulihora (Tamarind Rice), Rasam Rice and Dhadojanam (Curd Rice).

Located at Bhandarkar Road in Matunga East, a tummy-full meal for two people will cost approximately Rs 200.

My personal recommendation is to go for an early morning breakfast and start the day with their soul-touching filter coffee. It’ll surely give you a trip to the interiors of Andhra Pradesh.

Café Madras

Every South Indian or at least every person who belongs to a Tamilian or Telugu family will relate to the feeling of entering their homes and instantly being hit by a whiff of strong sour and spicy fragrance of freshly prepared Rasam. There’s nothing that explains the hunger you feel at that moment. When you enter Café Madras in Matunga, you are sure to experience the vibe of a South Indian household.

Serving people for 77 years straight, Café Madras introduced Rasam-Vada in the 1960s, making it the perfect hint of nostalgia that will not only sooth your urge but leave you craving for more. This pocket-friendly place is also home to Panpoli - a dessert made with jaggery and bananas, which is truly out of this world.

Thank me later for recommending you to try their Masala Dosa and Filter Coffee at King’s Circle in Matunga East, where you’ll not be spending more than Rs 250 for two people.

Café Mysore

One thing we all miss while staying away from home is a comforting home-cooked meal. If you’re looking for a place to eat a home-cooked South Indian meal, then Café Mysore is your place to visit.

When visiting Café Mysore opposite King’s Circle Garden in Matunga East, you do not want to miss out on their special servings of Neer Dosa and Idli Gadbad.

Simple, clean meals curated especially to suit your South Indian palette are their speciality. However, beware, if you can’t handle spice, you should stay away from the pickles and podis.

This meal will cost about Rs 250 for two people. And, do I have to repeat myself on the filter coffee bit?

P.S.: If you know some amazing South Indian restaurants, do recommend and help a foodie friend.
