'My Hope is Renewed': LVF Gives New Lease of Life

Updated: Aug 31, 2023

LVF's Mobile Medical Unit has impacted over 20,000 people in 23 villages in Maharashtra

"With no family support and age limiting my ability to travel, the MMU and its staff have been an absolute lifesaver, ensuring I receive the care I need," says Laxmi Sahdev Bhorghare, a 75-year-old widow from Boriwali village in Dapoli, Maharashtra, suffering from various health issues, including knee pain, fungal infection, painful itching, back pain, and joint pains.

The lack of medical facilities in her remote village made her situation worse. However, when the Sheetal Lodha-led Lodha Ventures Foundation launched their Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) in September 2022, Laxmi's life started to improve. The dedicated MMU staff provided her with free medicines, regular check-ups, and emotional support.

With LVF's assistance, Laxmi regained her strength and now supports herself through occasional housekeeping work. Her story is one of the many lives LVF has touched and made a positive impact by addressing healthcare needs and uplifting individuals belonging to underprivileged communities.

The MMU, to date, has provided medical assistance, preventive and diagnostic care to over 20,000 people in 23 villages across Maharashtra.

From one-sided shoulder pain and weakness, drastic weight loss to high blood pressure, and body aches, 77-year-old Chanderkant Balkrishan Mahakaal from Padale village in Dapoli, had lost all will to lead a painfree life.

With no children to care for him and his wife, and limited financial means of a meagre Rs 1000 they receieved from the government's Sanjeev Indira Gandhi Yogana scheme, the couple had no money left for medical treatment.

"Poverty left me with little choice for treatment, but the Mobile Medical Unit provided me free healthcare," says Chanderkant.

MMU's timely intervention and support, provided appropriate care to Chanderkant. Within two months, his health showed remarkable improvement, and he recovered from all his ailments. Signifying the necessity, Chanderkant's story made MMU to reach out to more such people who are facing similar situations and have limited choices and resources to tackle their medical issues.

"Before MMU, I resigned to living with these illnesses. Thanks to the MMU team, my hope is renewed, and I am very grateful," says Shardha Rane, a resilient 65-year-old widow, residing at Panchnadi, a quaint village in Dapoli. Despite grappling with health issues such as loss of appetite, knee pain, and back pain, Shradha remained strong.

With a family of five to support, Shardha's small agricultural land is her sole source of income, earning Rs 30,000 to Rs 35,000 annually. The tragic loss of her husband 21 years ago due to alcohol addiction forced her to shoulder family responsibilities alone. Nevertheless, her spirit remained undeterred.

Recently, Shardha's life improved when the MMU intervened, providing medical support that led to her complete recovery. Now, she leads a happy life in the village and cherishes time spent with her family.

Aside from providing medical assistance, the medical team conducts regular health camps and awareness sessions around nutrition for a more proactive approach towards health. Till now, 12 such sessions have been conducted where the LVF staff has counselled over 400 needy families.
