Updated: Jul 6, 2023

Although Konkani cuisine is mostly non-vegetarian food, the vegetarian fare is equally delicious

Grab a glass of Solkadhi and enjoy my experience as a person whose heart lives in Konkan. I am a mad fan of cooking and what you will read further is how that food has a strong influence on the place it is made in.

The Konkan region comprises of the coastal areas of Maharashtra and Goa. Although Konkani foods are mostly non-vegetarian, the vegetarian fare is equally delicious. Now let us dive into knowing Konkan better.

Wondering what Solkadhi is? Well, this is my favorite drink that is not just refreshing drink but also acts as a digestive drink after a heavy Meal. This can be consumed any time of the day and is super tasty. Let's start with morning now. Shall we?

If you are in Konkan, nature has its way to wake you up. You will hear birds chirping and if you choose to stay in the cottages near the beach, you will wake up to the most spectacular beach view and the sound of sea waves bringing you calm with fewer humans around. I love such places, places where you can hear your own thoughts.

You can indulge in fresh coconut water to start your day. For breakfast, you can go for Poha topped with freshly grated coconut, Amoboli served with Chatni or Chai or Fresh Bhajji (Pakoda).

You will also find a lot of fiery and spicy dishes with a hint of coconut. The currys and vegetable are made of locally available spices that is the main ingredient used in the delicacies made. Next time you are around Sawantwadi get Malvani masala’s back home to enjoy Konkani food.

There are few seasonal foods that in Konkan that will blow your mind. Konkan is known for its mango worldwide other than this Jackfruit, Cashewnut, Karvanda (Carissa carandas) Bharanga, Shevla Bhaji (Dragon stalk Yam), Alu wadi (Colocasia Leaves) are the most unique food that you will find in Konkan. When there are get-togethers Kombdi Wade is the recipe that my mother makes that tastes execusite. You cannot miss dried fish dishes with Rice Bhakri when in Konkan. Fish thali, Chicken Thali & Veg Thali with Modak and Puranpoli as a dessert is the best of the food one can ever ask for.

By now I am sure you know little more about Konkan but trust me what you experience will stay with you forever. Writing this made me nostalgic to the best time spent growing up. Next time you decide to go to Goa, I would suggest you take halt in Konkan to experience amazing hospitality and the most loving people.
