Of Delightfully Unabashed Companionship

Updated: Jul 6, 2023

The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse is about finding the courage to share struggles, fears and dreams

A story of four unlikely friends as they explore the world around them, casually reflecting on the meaning of life, universal truths and friendship told in the most special of ways. A story about finding the courage to share struggles, fears and dreams. This book is essentially a series of delightfully untamed sketches, each accompanied by a hand written snippet of the conversation on friendship, kindness and self-esteem in a minimalistic way.

The book follows the journey of an inquisitive and homesick little boy who's looking for home; on his way, he meets a mole and a much-needed friendship starts to form. The little boys upon finding a companion, coach and confidante in the mole, shares his fears and in return the mole shares advice and his love of cake.

Together they meet a fox, who's been hurt by life. Caught in a snare, the fox is angry and warns the mole that he would eat him if he weren’t caught in the snare. But, the mole knew that if it leaves the fox in the snare, it will die. The mole shows courage and decides to chew through the wire to free the fox and eventually, he learns that love is even better than cake!

The fox then becomes a companion who is mostly silent on their wanderings and later returns the favour by saving the mole from drowning. Then finally a horse completes the quartet. The horse who is gentle, kind, and full of wisdom brings healings to the other three companions and those reading this book.

Each companion in this book has a distinct character- the boy is full of questions; the mole is greedy for cake; the fox is mainly silent and wary because he's been hurt by life & the horse is the biggest and gentlest thing they have ever encountered. Yet they all help and love each other, even in fierce adversity.

While the hand-drawn images in this book are whimsical, delicate and deeply affecting, the comments are true nuggets of wisdom – tender, authentic and potentially life changing in their powerful simplicity. This book is a reminder that while we are fragile, the world can be tough as well as a beautiful one. However it also is a reminder that the solution to all our problems are equally simple – its to focus on love, compassion and kindness. This is a book that wants to make the world a better place. I promise it’s a hopeful book that would appeal to anyone of eight as it would to the octogenarians. The entire book is an experience complete in itself.

To say that this book is a gem would be an understatement. This book has given me laughter, strength and encouragement in the hardest of time – during the darkest days of 2020. This book has been a balm and an uplift.
