The God of Cinema: An Experience You Can't Refuse

Updated: Jun 2, 2023

51 years on, The Godfather is quite simply a masterful piece of film-making and by far the finest gangster film ever shot

In 1969, Mario Puzo's novel, The Godfather, was released to the world, eventually becoming one of the most popular fiction books of all time and selling over 21 million copies globally. It has inspired three critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, ingratiating its characters into modern American cultural mythology. But, what makes this story so captivating?

Puzo had no personal experience with organized crime, however, extensive research gave him the information he needed to write about a fictitious Mafia family, the Corleones. Francis Ford Coppola and Puzo worked together on the screenplay for The Godfather (1972) and its two sequels (1974 and 1990). The first two received nine Academy Award nominations including best picture and best screenplay. The films were praised for their masterful storytelling, cinematography, and iconic performances from actors like Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and James Caan.

The Godfather's story takes place in a small space, and because of this, we identify with characters who are fundamentally bad. A masterful conjuring trick, the story by Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola invites us to view the Mafia solely on its own terms. Don Vito Corleone's character, played by Marlon Brando, gains sympathy and even admiration; during the entire movie, this lifetime professional criminal does nothing that we can really find objectionable.

The cinematography of the film is also exceptional with Coppola and cinematographer Gordon Willis creating a dark and moody atmosphere that perfectly captures the gritty world of the mafia. The iconic scenes, such as the opening wedding scene and the horse head in the bed scene, are expertly shot and have become an integral part of the film's history.

One of the most impressive aspects of the film is the performance of the cast. Marlon Brando's portrayal of Vito Corleone is legendary, earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor. Al Pacino's performance as Michael is also outstanding, as he transforms from an innocent outsider to a ruthless mafia don. The supporting cast, including James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton, all deliver exceptional performances, adding depth and nuance to the story.

The film's score, composed by Nino Rota, is another highlight of the movie. The haunting melodies of the score perfectly complement the on-screen action, creating an unforgettable cinematic experience.

Overall, The Godfather is a masterpiece that deserves all the accolades it has received over the years. It is a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences decades after its release.

If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend you do so, as it is an essential part of film history and a must-watch for any movie lover.
