From Scratch: Finding a Home in Love

Unlike most romantic OTT series these days, From Scratch stands out for its old school charm and unique screenplay

From Scratch is not just a movie title or a catch phrase. It’s a parallel of my life the past few months. Being a new girl in the city of dreams – Mumbai, I am starting a life literally from scratch and this makes the Netflix series all the more dear to me.

“Unlike most romantic OTT series these days, From Scratch stands out for its old school charm and unique screenplay.”

Right from the actor line up to storytelling and dialogues, locations and the whole idea of a classic cross culture love story blends perfectly. While most people may feel that these romantic stories are dreamy and not real, they are sure to resonate with the idea of being a commitment driven one man or one woman theory.

The American drama limited series, created by Attica Locke and Tembi Locke, is inspired by Tembi Locke's memoir of the same name. The eight episode show premiered on Netflix in October, starring Zoe Saldaña and Eugenio Mastrandrea.

The heartfelt drama is the story of Black American Amahle “Amy” Wheeler (Zoe Saldana) who falls in love with Sicilian chef Lino Ortolano (Eugenio Mastrandrea) while studying in Florence. A passionate relationship ensues when Lino swoons Amy with his cooking skills. Finding love through food and joy, they end up moving together to Los Angeles where Amy is chasing her dream job and Lino wants to open a restaurant, while doing everything “from scratch”.

As the story progresses, the plot becomes a bit more intense with life’s challenges coming to play. Again, a classic plot twist of sacrificing your love for dealing with harsh realities of cultural differences, cancer, parenting and conflicting familial allegiances. One may call it cliché, but what’s interesting is this time it is not the female character who has to give up her hopes and dreams to be with her man. Leaving his native land, breaking conventional barriers and just prioritising love over everything else.

Losing a loved one is hard, but moving on is harder. Such has been the situation I had to face recently and hence this series touched my life. The series is a real tear-jerker and strikes a chord with everyone who believes in the power of love and understand how differences while they can divide us, they also pull us together and that’s the unique thing about life.
