Batman vs Superman: When Crusades Collide

Updated: Apr 7, 2023

The Man of Steel sequel is a visual treat for every comic book lover

Every movie lover has a comfort film that they can watch multiple times and still fall in love with it all over again with each screening. For me, it’s Zack Snyder’s Batman vs Superman - Dawn of Justice. Sequel to Man of Steel and second movie from the DC trilogy that also features Justice League, this ultimate extended version is the first live-action film to feature Batman and Superman together.

To explain my love for Dawn of Justice over all other DC movies, let me start with the casting. It was good. Henry Cavil nailed it once again as the Man of Steel, Gal Gadot was at her best in bringing Wonder Woman to the silver screen for the first time, and Ben Affleck did a great job as Batman which was unexpected yet somehow a fan favourite. Jessie Eisenberg put a fantastic effort in portraying Lex Luthor, Amy Adam was good once again as Lois Lane, while the new Alfred also did his job fairly well.

Of course, like every movie there were pros and cons but as a whole it’s an epic superhero film which is a visual treat for every comic book lover.

There were ample moments that looked larger than life in the theatre but also give you goosebumps on TV screens. The epic gladiator fight between the Son of Krypton and the Bat of Gotham tops the list.

The unspoken chemistry between Clark and Lois was admirable, it will make you smile and recall your time with your loved ones. The last scene (funeral) was beautifully picturised and presented especially the part where Lois Lane is shown wearing the ring given by Clark as a surprise.

Now coming to the plot. It was refreshing to watch something different as people are used to watch fun loving, straightforward, non-complicated superhero movies to date, but this comprised of a more greyish, and darker tones which wasn’t seen before in the very many superhero films.

I would admire Zack Snyder for bringing his core vision in front of the audience even after knowing the risk it comes with. He combined the storyline from the comic book with his own tone and texture, which I personally loved.

Story, shooting, production, and direction, everything was up to the expectations or maybe even beyond. But sadly, Batman failed to meet the high expectations which were created by Christian Bale’s depiction of the Dark Knight in Christopher Nolen’s trilogy.

Ben Affleck cannot be blamed because he fit perfectly as Bruce Wayne. It’s just that the Batman he portrayed was controversial. This Batman was way different from the one that I have grown up reading in comic books, the essence was missing because the character was overdone.

This Batman was aggressive and killed people which is polar opposite to the comic books and previous movies in which he takes an oath of not killing people. This Batman lacked brain and heart when the rage took over which made the wisest member of the Justice League look blind.

Aside from this, the movie was fabulous, a must watch. A movie which beautifully set the stage for its sequel ‘Justice League’ is a must watch.
