A Designer's Therapy

Updated: Jul 6, 2023

The process of bringing to life someone's dream home is a designer's true therapy

Design therapy, also known as art therapy or creative therapy, is a captivating discipline that combines the principles of psychology and artistic expression to foster self discovery, introspection, and healing.

All these can be achieved in several ways. While designing someone's dream home, right from creating a mood board and space planning to selecting the materials, colours, and even the furniture, everything can be extremely therapeutic to a designer.

Colour therapy is one of the most satisfying to a designer when seeing their vision come to reality. Color psychology is the study of how colors affect human emotions and behavior. Different colors can evoke specific feelings and perceptions, influencing moods and creating psychological responses.

For example, yellow is often associated with feelings of happiness, optimism, and warmth. It can stimulate mental activity, increase energy levels, and promote positivity, making it an ideal choice for creating a cheerful and inviting atmosphere.

Similar is also the case with selection of materials and furniture. Without ‘material,’ designers cannot bring life, originality, and character to the spaces. It is, therefore, necessary to be aware of which material triggers what part of the brain, which material is suitable for which milieu, and which material functions better in a certain setting.

For instance, concrete gives a bold overpowering impression. It suggests unidirectionality, focus, rigidity, uniformity, etc. In contrast, wood gives a homely feeling of warmth and comfort. There are more than a hundred species of wood. The diversity in wood grains, textures, and tones can manipulate the emotions and productivity levels accordingly.

A comfortable room can relieve restlessness, help you decompress, and leave you feeling more energetic. Cozy furniture doesn’t mean you’re lacking in style by any means. You can have the living room all your friends and neighbors want to hang out in without buying furniture that leaves you feeling stiff after sitting. One of the best advantages to creating a space that encourages positive mindsets is that it boosts your mental health overall.

In our fast paced and technology driven society, it is becoming increasingly crucial to find moments of respite and connection with our authentic selves. So, the process of making dreams come true becomes a designer's therapy.
